Dogs

Dogs

Dogs are one of the pets that are part of our family. For years, many have shared their lives with a faithful "four-legged friend" who goes out of their way to make you happy.

But what do you know about dogs? Do you know what its origin is? And what breeds of dogs exist? All this and much more is what you will find in this section.

Characteristics of dogs

Characteristics of dogs

The dog, scientific name canis lupus familiarisIt is one of the most common pets in homes around the world. Of very different sizes, you can find very small dogs, and other giants. It all depends on the space and the taste of the person for a specific breed of dog, or a size.

It is characterized by having a well-developed body that can weigh between 1-2 kilos and 80-90 in the case of the larger specimens. As for its size, it will also differ. In almost all breeds, the snout is elongated with a large tongue that serves to regulate body temperature and sharp teeth that are used above all to chew food, although they are also a weapon for them in case of fights or if they see each other. endangered.

Your main senses are hearing and smell., which are highly developed, even more than in humans.

Most dog breeds have a tail that serves as a balance when walking and running, but it can also be a way of expressing feelings, whether they are happy, afraid, angry...

in dogs, life expectancy ranges from 9 to 20 years, being the average 13-14 years normal. Certain studies say that the larger the breed, the less its life expectancy is due to health problems that are attributable to age.

The behavior of dogs

Dogs, by nature, are very social. Depending on how his character develops, depending on the lifestyle he leads, how he is treated, etc. the dog develops a way of being that can be positive or negative.

It has various forms of communication, either through barking, growling, vocalizations... but also through their body language (ears, tail, fur...).

They are very capable of learning what they want to teach, as well as adapting to any situation. Now, there will be some who need more patience than others, but all of them can be trained and learn tricks or follow orders.

The origin of this mascot

The origin of dogs

Dogs have always been part of our life. Originating from wolves, there are many documented cases in which humans and wolves have established "cordial" relations in your day to day. To the human, he was an effective hunting partner; for wolves, humans implied safety and food. In fact, it is suspected that the domestication of wolves came from humans themselves.

According to some studies, humans left food for wolves in an attempt to prevent them from attacking the animals they raised, or the crops they had. This made the wolves not see humans as a threat, but as a source of food that, little by little, also became a source of affection, becoming part of their own "family".

Today, having dogs in a house, in an apartment... is something very common. They share our day to day and adapt to the lifestyle we lead. They give us love, affection, fidelity and company, something that, although it seems "normal", for many it is not.

Dog breeds

La International Cynological Federation, in Spanish, International Cynological Federation, Better known as FCI, it is the world canine organization that is in charge of organizing the different breeds of dogs. Specifically, for the FCI there are 10 large groups that would encompass the 343 accredited dog breeds today. Each group attends to a different type of dog, so you can find the following:

  • Group 1: Shepherd and cattle dogs. Among them you can find the German shepherd, the Komondor, the Border collie, Welsh corgi, Australian mountain dog...
  • Group 2: Pinscher and Schnauzer, Molossoid and Mountain or Swiss Cattle Dogs.
  • Group 3: Terriers. This, in turn, is divided into four subcategories, which are: large and medium size, small size, terriers such as bulls, and companion terriers.
  • Group 4: Teckel or dachshund dogs. It is the only group where you will only find three breeds of dogs.
  • Group 5: Spitz and primitive type. In this case, you will find seven subgroups: European spitz, Asian spitz, guard and herding Nordics, hunting Nordics, primitives, and hunting primitives.
  • Group 6: Bloodhounds and tracking dogs. As a curiosity, we will tell you that the Dalmatian is included within this group as a dog similar to tracking and hounds.
  • Group 7: Pointing dogs. In turn, it is divided into various subgroups from continental, English and Irish.
  • Group 8: Breeds of retrievers, game lifters and water dogs.
  • Group 9: Companion breeds. They are where the majority of small breed dogs or intended to keep company are included.
  • Group 10: Greyhounds. Divided into three subgenera, long-haired, wire-haired, and short-haired.

Something that not many know is that, in addition to these 10 large groups, there is also a group 11, which are those breeds of dogs that are accepted provisionally, but not definitively. There are not many races in it, and those that are waiting, at the moment they are definitive, will be included within the different groups mentioned above. And what are those?

  • Thai Bangkaew dog (Thailand). Once accepted, you will move to group 5.
  • Southeast European Shepherd Dog (Southeastern Europe), will be moved to group 2.
  • Danish and Swedish Farm Dog (Denmark, Sweden), will be moved to group 2.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina – Croatia Shepherd (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia), which will move to group 2.
  • Gonczy polsky (Poland). It will be included in group 6.
  • Uruguayan Cimarron (Uruguay). It will go to group 2.
  • Russian dog toy (Russia). It will be included in group 9.
  • Australian shepherd stumpy tail (Australia). It will go in group 1.
